What is VOI?

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

Verification of Identity commonly referred to as “VOI”, is an e-conveyancing compliance requirement necessary for buyers and sellers of property.

We are required to formally establish the identity of all signatories to all documents lodged at the Titles Office as well as the identity of those who are to be provided custody of a Certificate of Title. These requirements, by placing an obligation on lawyers to take “reasonable steps” to verify the identity of a person signing a document or claiming to have the right to transact property, seek to reduce the incidence of serious fraud in our community.

“Reasonable steps” require each individual, director or attorney to attend a face-to-face meeting at our office whilst producing the prescribed identification documents sufficient to prove identity.

The VOI process

When asked to complete a VOI there are multiple ways at which you can do this including:

  1. Australia Post: Australia Post provides a comprehensive verification process involving identity checks, witnessing of signatures and organisation of secure transportation of documents to our office. This is priced at $49.00 payable on the day and to Australia Post.

  2. InfoTrack ID: InfoTrackID is an easy-to-use online identity verification platform that allows you to complete your Verification of Identity (VOI) to the same standard every time whether in person, remotely or via one of our trusted agents. It is our way to help you feel confident that you can undertake your verification of identity checks in accordance with your industry standards. This is priced at $25.00 per person, payable at settlement of your matter.

  3. Your conveyancer or legal practitioner: At Andrews Crosthwaite, we provide Verification of Identity services to our clients at no additional cost. If you are a client, come and see our friendly staff to quickly meet this requirement with ease and assurance. If you are not a client, we suggest asking your provider about the services they can assist you with as they may be able to help you.

What you will need

Ideally, the best form of identity provided would be a current Passport and Drivers Licence. However, where clients cannot produce either of these, birth certificates, Medicare cards and other identifiers may be utilised. If at all you feel as though you may not be able to meet the criterium, don’t hesitate to contact us and let us guide you through the process.

International VOI

Additionally, where clients are based internationally, our team is equipped with the knowledge of the verification process through notarial services providers. Where applicable, we may be of assistance in writing direction documentation required and helping you book and manage your appointment with our on-site notary.
